Five of the Best Serums

Roberta Lister, our resident beauty writer talks us through five of her favourite serums.

Every go-to skincare routine should include a serum. These super-charged liquids are a modern-day essential – more potent than a moisturiser, and powerful enough to deliver nourishing actives deep into the skin.

The truth is, when it comes to serums, there are millions of great ones out there.  The tricky part is finding the one that’s right for you – there’s no one-size-fits-all answer here. Read on for a run-down of my favourite picks.

The organic one: Oskia Get Up And Glow

Oskia’s Get Up and Glow is more of a complexion perfector than a traditional serum. It’s a water-based formula with a gel-like consistency, and boasts a beautiful iridescent sheen that makes skin look instantly fresh and healthy.

This 98% organic formula is a powerhouse of organic goodness, enriched with a whole host of skin-boosting actives. But it’s the house’s signature ingredient that steals the spotlight: a patent-pending MSM complex which harnesses the healing powers of sulphur to aid collagen production and keep skin plump and supple.

Layer it simply under a light moisturiser, adding a dewy foundation for extra coverage. Skin will be plump, fresh, and glowy – and if that isn’t enough, the brand’s signature Rose Lychee fragrance (all natural, of course) will have you enamoured.

The gentle one: The Body Shop Overnight Vitamin E Serum in Oilbody shop

The Body Shop is a go-to for no-nonsense skincare with honest ingredients and zero gimmicks. I love the brilliantly gentle Overnight Vitamin E Serum in Oil: a super-charged hydrator with the lightness of a serum and the nourishing feel of an oil.

Ideal for young, dry skin, this one contains a high concentration of wheatgerm oil, a great antioxidant, and organic soya, which is packed with nourishing Vitamin E.

Apply a couple of drops beneath a night cream, or blend the two in the palm of your hand and apply together.  Gentle, effective, and remarkably well priced, it’s a winner all-round.

The one with all the hype: Pestle & Mortar

Irish brand Pestle & Mortar launched last year with a single product – Pure Hyaluronic Serum. This unassuming little bottle quickly became a cult hero, selling out in a matter of days.

The secret to this serum’s success is a remarkably high concentration of hyaluronic acid – a powerful moisturising molecule which can hold up to 100x its weight in water. Pestle & Mortar’s formula contains 80% hyaluronic, blended with soothing aloe and vitamin E for further nourishment.

This clear, fragrance-free formula is ideal for round-the-clock use – it absorbs well, can be blended with a night cream, and doesn’t slip beneath foundation. I suggest snapping one up now, before it sells out again.

The one you didn’t know you needed: Niod Lip Concentrate

Niod is a really exciting new beauty brand that has commanded a sizeable cult following for its science-y skincare products. The Lip Bio-Lipid Concentrate is essentially a plumping serum for lips, and it isn’t nearly as scary as it sounds. The formula comprises a host of insane-sounding ingredients which work to enhance lip hydration, texture, and size in both the short and long term.

Niod advises an intense 30-day affair with this one. On day one, you’ll notice that lips are deeper in colour and noticeably plumper, due to the increased water retention. Within 3 days, production of natural hyaluronic acid will begin. With 2 weeks, collagen kicks in, and after one month you’ll have a higher lipid content, which translates as bigger, plumper lips. While we can’t vouch for the scientific stuff, we can promise that this bottle really delivers. The biggest benefit is perhaps the way it works with lipstick –  with such a well-moisturised base, even those super-matte shades glide on with ease.

Niod Lip Bio-Lipid Concentrate, £38

The Luxe one: Omorovicza Radiance Renewal Serum

Omorovicza’s brilliant Radiance Renewal Serum is the perfect pick for oily and combination skin. An oil-free formula, it contains calming zinc and moisture-binding sodium hyaluronate, which works to regulate sebum production and prevent shine. On application, skin feels instantly brighter and fresher, but the long term results are even more remarkable. The brand’s unique Hydro Mineral Transference formula ensures the mineral-rich formula sinks deep into the skin, resulting in plumper, oily skin with frequent use.

Omorovicza Radiance Renewal Serum, £75
